Heat pump installation by Budget Electrical

NZ's favourite heat pump, done properly

A high wall heat pump mounts near the ceiling, pushes warm air down across the room in winter, and doubles as an air conditioner and dehumidifier in summer.

It's the most cost-effective way to heat a single room or open-plan living space - which is why it's the unit we install more than any other, from Titirangi to Terrace End.

Doing more than one or two rooms? Compare a multi-room system or ducted heat pump - we'll happily price both.

Why the high wall is NZ's favourite

One unit covers Auckland's muggy summers and Manawatū's frosty mornings.

Cheapest to buy and install

The lowest-cost heat pump type - and among the cheapest heating to run, full stop, at roughly a third of the cost of a plug-in electric heater for the same warmth.

Heats, cools and dehumidifies

Winter warmth, summer cooling and moisture control in a single wall-mounted unit.

Whisper-quiet

Modern units run as low as 19–21 dB indoors - quieter than a library.

Smart control

Wi-Fi modules let you warm the lounge from the motorway or the school pickup line.

Cleaner air

Built-in filtration captures dust and airborne particles - a real benefit in older, draughtier homes.

Done in one visit

Most homes: 3–4 hours, floors vacuumed before we leave.

Getting the size right (this is 90% of the job)

An undersized heat pump runs at maximum all winter - noisy, inefficient, and never quite warm. An oversized one costs more upfront, then short-cycles: on, off, on, off, never running long enough to dehumidify. Both mistakes are permanent once the unit's on the wall.

Our free in-home assessment calculates the actual heating load from your room dimensions, ceiling height, insulation, window area and orientation. In Palmerston North we size for heating output at 2°C outdoor temperature - the spec that matters on a July morning. In Auckland we weight cooling and moisture removal more heavily, because that's what you'll run six months of the year.

The brands we install (and why)

We're accredited installers for Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu and Panasonic. Accreditation matters for one practical reason: it unlocks the full 5–6 year manufacturer's parts and labour warranty.

We'll typically show you a good/better/best option across two brands - for example a quiet, efficient workhorse for a bedroom versus a premium unit with humidity control and plasma filtration for the family lounge - with straight talk about what the extra dollars actually buy.

What installation day looks like

Most homes: 3–4 hours, done in one visit.

1

Confirm placement

Indoor unit high on the wall for even heat throw; outdoor unit somewhere discreet, on raised feet, clear of bedrooms and boundary noise limits.

2

Mount and connect

Core-drill, mount, and run the refrigerant lines, drain and cabling - capped in tidy trunking, colour-matched where possible.

3

Electrical and certificate

A registered electrician completes the wiring and isolator, and issues your Electrical Safety Certificate.

4

Commission and handover

Vacuum test, commission, and a five-minute lesson on running it efficiently (hint: set 20–21°C and leave it - don't blast 28°C).

Landlords & Healthy Homes: one correctly sized high wall unit in the main living room is the most common route to Healthy Homes heating compliance (fixed heating capable of 18°C). We supply the required heating assessment documentation with every rental install and offer portfolio pricing for multiple properties.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a high wall heat pump cost in NZ?

Fully installed, expect $2,000–$3,300 for a bedroom-sized unit and $2,500–$5,000 for living areas, depending on capacity and installation complexity. Our back-to-back “from” prices include everything: unit, pipework, electrical and GST.

What size high wall heat pump do I need?

Roughly: 2.5–3.2 kW for a bedroom, 4.2–5 kW for a medium living room, 6 kW+ for open-plan spaces - adjusted for insulation, windows and ceiling height. We calculate it precisely, free, in your home.

Where should a high wall heat pump be installed?

High on an external wall where the airflow can travel the length of the room without blowing directly onto seating or beds, with the outdoor unit as close behind as possible for efficiency.

Are high wall heat pumps noisy?

No - modern indoor units run from about 19 dB on low fan, and we position outdoor units away from bedrooms and neighbours' windows to comfortably meet noise expectations.

High wall or floor console - which is better?

High walls are cheaper, more efficient per dollar and don't take up wall or floor space. Floor consoles suit rooms with limited high-wall space or where you're replacing an old night-store heater. We'll recommend honestly on site.

Can one high wall heat pump heat my whole house?

It will heat the space it's in and take the edge off adjacent open areas, but it can't push warm air down hallways. For whole-home comfort, see our multi-room and ducted systems.
