A dirty heat pump costs you every single day

Your heat pump moves thousands of litres of air through itself every day, and everything in that air - dust, cooking residue, pet dander, moisture - accumulates inside it.

A dirty heat pump works harder, costs more to run (a clogged system can use 20–30% more power), smells musty, and quietly grows mould that it then blows into the room your family breathes in.

An annual professional service reverses all of that in about an hour. Second unit half price on the same visit.

“Can't I just clean it myself?” - honestly, partly yes

You should vacuum your own filters every couple of months, and we'll show you how at every visit it's free and takes ten minutes. But the filter is the only part you can reach. What a DIY clean can't touch:

The indoor coil

Properly cleaning it means a controlled low-pressure flush with a capture system, not a squirt of supermarket spray. This is where efficiency lives.

The fan barrel

The long roller behind the vanes where mould actually colonises. If your heat pump smells musty on start-up, this is why.

The condensate drain

The most common cause of a heat pump leaking water down your wall is a blocked drain line. We flush and test it.

The outdoor unit

Coil washed, airflow cleared, mounts checked. A choked outdoor coil strangles the whole system.

The measurements

Operating temperatures, current draw, refrigerant performance, electrical terminals tightened. This is how faults get caught at $0 instead of at $800 - often while still under warranty.

The paperwork

Dated service label fitted and a written condition report emailed to you, flagging anything to watch

What's in our full service - the checklist we're happy to publish

Indoor: filters deep-cleaned · coil flushed and sanitised · fan barrel cleaned and treated for mould · vanes, grilles and casing cleaned · condensate tray and drain flushed and flow-tested · airflow and outlet temperature measured.

Outdoor: coil washed · debris and vegetation cleared · fan and mounts checked · pipe insulation inspected.

System: refrigerant performance checked · electrical connections inspected and tightened · full run test in heating and cooling · dated service label fitted · written condition report emailed to you.

If a cheap “$99 special” doesn't list a coil flush, a fan-barrel clean and a drain test - that's the difference you're paying for.

Why Auckland and Manawatū units need it more than most

Auckland: humidity is a mould factory. Units that spend summer dehumidifying and cooling sit damp inside - the black spotting on vanes you can see usually means more you can't. Our sanitising treatment deals with the colony, not just the visible tips.

Palmerston North: heavy winter run-hours plus airborne dust off the plains load coils fast, and wind-exposed outdoor units take a beating. A pre-winter service (book in autumn) means full output on the first frost, not a breakdown call in July.

Landlords: compliant, healthy, documented

Rental heating has to actually work, not just exist - and tenants notice a musty unit before you do. We service entire portfolios on one invoice, provide dated service reports per property for your records, and flag any unit that's heading for failure before winter (or before a tenancy inspection).

Businesses: we run scheduled preventative maintenance for offices, retail and hospitality - see commercial air conditioning maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a heat pump service cost in NZ?

Professional servicing typically runs $130–$250 per unit nationally. Ours is $149 for a full deep-clean service ($99 for additional units on the same visit), ducted systems from $250.

How often should a heat pump be serviced?

Professionally once a year - ideally autumn or spring, before peak season. Clean your own filters every 4–8 weeks in between, more often with pets or heavy use.

Why does my heat pump smell musty?

Almost always mould or bacterial growth on the fan barrel and coil, fed by condensation. A deep clean and sanitise fixes it; a filter wipe doesn't.

Does servicing keep my warranty valid?

Manufacturers expect reasonable maintenance, and regular servicing means faults get found and claimed within the 5–6 year warranty window rather than discovered after it. We're warranty agents for the major brands and handle claims for you.

How long does a service take?

45–90 minutes per unit depending on condition. Units that haven't been touched in years take longer - we'll tell you before we start if extra time's needed, never after.

My heat pump isn't working properly - service or repair?

If it's running but tired, smelly or weak: book a service, which fixes the majority of performance complaints. If it's showing an error code, tripping the power, iced up or dead: go straight to heat pump repairs.
